The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) is a leading global agency working to end the AIDS epidemic as a public health threat by 2030. As the primary advocate for action on HIV/AIDS, UNAIDS unites the efforts of 11 UN organizations, including UNICEF, UNHCR, and the World Health Organization, to coordinate a comprehensive response to the epidemic. The agency's Programme Coordinating Board, comprising representatives from 22 governments, five non-governmental organizations, and the UNAIDS Cosponsors, guides its work. UNAIDS serves a broad range of stakeholders, including governments, civil society organizations, and individuals living with HIV. The agency provides critical support to countries in their efforts to prevent new HIV infections, treat those affected by the virus, and mitigate the social and economic impacts of the epidemic. UNAIDS also advocates for increased investment in HIV/AIDS programming and works to ensure that the needs of key populations, such as sex workers, men who have sex with men, and people who inject drugs, are addressed. One of the notable initiatives undertaken by UNAIDS is the development of a new approach to ensure the sustainability of the HIV response. The agency has also proposed a new Global AIDS Strategy and Transition Working Group to guide its work in the coming years. Additionally, UNAIDS has launched the Results and Transparency Portal, which aims to increase transparency and accountability around its work. Through its various initiatives and programs, UNAIDS continues to play a vital role in the global response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
